Hamantaschen
Original recipe found at The Nosher.
- 1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 T milk
- 1 t vanilla
- 1 t orange zest
- 2 cup flour
- 1/4 t baking powder
- 1/4 t salt
- Cream butter and sugar together until smooth.
- Add egg, milk, vanilla, and orange zest.
- Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Add these dry ingredients to the wet and mix.
- Chill the dough.
- Roll the dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
- Cut out circles from the dough, around 2.5 inches in diameter.
- Place around two teaspoons of jam in the center of each dough circle.
- Form the circles into triangles by gently folding up the edges of the circle in three places. Pinch together the edges. Optionally use water to help the edges stick together.
- bake at 400 degrees for 7+6 minutes, turning the tray midway
Tips
- Place the cookies in the fridge for at least 15 minutes prior to placing in the oven. The cold cookies will better hold their shape.
- Take the cookies out as soon as the bottoms start to brown.
- The cookies will become softer overnight as they absorb ambient moisture.
